As we all work together to create safer environments in healthcare settings, awareness around PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), also known as “forever chemicals,” is growing rapidly. Several states have enacted regulations to restrict certain PFAS-containing products. Here’s what you need to know about PFAS, their uses, and how these changes may impact your purchasing options at Direct Supply.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS, or Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, are synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in various products since the 1940s. PFAS are incredibly durable, resisting oil, water and heat. This durability means they break down very slowly, often persisting in the environment and in our bodies for decades, hence the nickname “forever chemicals.” Certain types of PFAS have been linked to health concerns, which has led to regulatory actions aimed at reducing exposure.

Which Products Most Commonly Contain PFAS?

PFAS are often found in products that benefit from their water- and stain-resistant properties. Common items which may contain PFAS include:

  • Nonstick cookware
  • Stain-resistant fabrics and carpets
  • Water-repellent clothing
  • Some types of cosmetics
  • Firefighting foams
  • Certain food packaging materials

In the healthcare industry, PFAS are sometimes found in durable, stain-resistant upholstery, kitchenware and cleaning supplies.

Where Can I See If a Product Contains PFAS?

To help you make informed choices, Direct Supply now requires that its suppliers label products with a PFAS indicator. While shopping with Direct Supply you will see an attribute that indicates whether products you’re considering contain PFAS.

Why Can’t I Buy Certain Products in My State?

As people become more concerned with the health and environmental impacts of PFAS, some states have passed laws that prohibit PFAS-containing products from being sold into the state. We expect additional states will enact similar laws, and those states with current laws will expand the scope of impacted products in the future.

When you are shopping with Direct Supply online, once you assign a “Ship To” location to your order our system will flag any restricted products in your cart, and offer you the opportunity to remove or replace the restricted item(s) with a suggested alternative before completing your order.
